PRELIMINARY PROVISION
The Civil Code of Quebec governs, in harmony with the Charter of human rights and freedoms and the general principles of law, persons, relationships between persons, as well as property.
The code is made up of a set of rules which, in all matters to which the letter, spirit or object of its provisions relate, establishes, in express or implicit terms, common law. In these matters, it constitutes the basis of other laws which may themselves add to or derogate from the code.
